A commuter has slammed train bosses after he was greeted with "putrid" water in the toilets on a peak time London-bound service on Monday.

James Waters, 32, had the nasty encounter on his morning train journey to work in Tunbridge Wells. When the Southeastern season ticket holder went to wash his hands, he was left gagging after vile, stinking brown water poured from the tap.

Mr Waters was aboard a train from Deal to Tonbridge via Paddock Wood.

Having recently forked out more than £4,000 for his annual pass the account manager shot a video on his mobile phone to capture evidence of the disgusting water.

He said: "I went to wash my hands and put them under the tap but nothing happened. I looked back to see this putrid brown liquid oozing out.

"I was gagging as the smell was so vile. I tried again to see if it was a one-off but it was still coming out jet brown. I shouldn't have to wash my hands in such dirty water. What if this was used by a small child?"

A Southeastern spokeswoman said the rail firm had apologised to Mr Waters and was sorry for his "bad experience". She said: "I can confirm the septic and water systems are entirely separate units, so it's most likely to be an issue of dirty water.

"Our trains are cleaned on a daily basis and undergo thorough and routine maintenance.

"Our engineers are checking the taps and the unit will be taken out of service while we investigate and fix the issue."

Mr Waters also complained that heating in four of the 12 carriages was not working on Monday and added an attempt to use the toilet the following day caused him further alarm when he discovered live wiring hanging from an open cabinet.

"I've had it with Southeastern," he said. "They hold me to ransom, I've paid for my season ticket and now I have to put up with dirty carriages, ripped seats and now I can't even use the toilets."
