Save the Past for the Future and back the museums in Thanet

Friday, April 03, 2009, 12:00

THE Isle of Thanet Gazette is calling on the people of Thanet to Save the Past for the Future and back the museums in Margate and Ramsgate.

Ramsgate Maritime Museum closed its doors in October last year and this week it was Margate Museum’s turn when the former curator Bob Bradley bade farewell to the Old Town Hall residence after 24 years.

Thanet council is in talks to find a way to reopen both museums but needs support and money.

We want you to let us know if you think you can help, whether by forming a group to take on the running of either museum or adding your voice in support.

Council leader Sandy Ezekiel said he loved the museums and the authority is in discussions to get them both reopened.

He said: "I’d love the museums to be open but what we need is a proper business plan from someone and how it would encourage people to the area. What we cannot have is the rate payers of Thanet paying thousands of pounds for something that is not attracting many visitors.

"We are working to keep them open and Margate Museum will remain open in a different format. A living museum that will be open as and when. We have some plans for the Old Town Hall but these are still being negotiated and we’re looking at between a year and 18 months."

Margate Civic Society and Ramsgate Society have already pledged their support to the Isle of Thanet Gazette campaign.

If you want to add your voice to the campaign email your name, address and phone number to thom.morris@krnmedia.co.uk or leave your comments below.
