A GIANT historic monument in Riverhead has been saved from crumbling following a cash boost from a county councillor and English Heritage.

The obelisk, nearly two-storey high and located on private property in Marlborough Crescent, had been placed on the "heritage at risk" after the preservation group English Heritage identified it as endangered.

The 18th century monument to the Canadian Wars needed repairs to plaques to prevent loss of historic detail.

But following a fundraising campaign by the Montreal Residents Association, vital restoration work has been carried out to ensure the monument's stability.

Association member Tom McInerney said: "We wrote letters and took pictures and pursued English Heritage and the county council.

"Between them they paid up the money to get it renovated."

Part of the cash, which totalled nearly £3,000, came from John London's allowance as a county councillor.
