A FIRE broke out in an empty house in Ramsgate leaving the property gutted.

Three fire engines from Ramsgate and Thanet were called to the house in Pegwell Road at 5am after a call from the nearby pub The Chilton Tavern.

Firefighters put out the blaze within an hour but not before the fire had spread from the ground floor to whole of the building. Nobody was hurt.

In December 2007 the owners of the property were refused planning permission to demolish the house and build 26 new homes.

Police are investigating the cause of fire.
