Port of Dover policeman knifed in leg

​A PORT of Dover police officer has been stabbed in the leg.

The incident happened when officers were called to P&O ferry the Pride of Calais at 1.50pm yesterday.

They were responding to reports of threatening behaviour by two passengers as the craft arrived at Dover's Eastern Docks.

While officers investigated one, a police constable, was stabbed in the thigh. 

The 41-year-old was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and was later released after treatment.

He is now recovering at home.

A Port police spokesman said: "It is too early to say how long he will be off duty. Fortunately his injury does not appear to be life-changing."

*Michel Berman, a 61 year-old French national,  was arrested at the scene and has subsequently been charged with causing Grievous Bodily Harm to Police Constable Andrew Atkinson with intent;Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm to Nigel Davies from P&O Ferries and Possession of a pointed bladed article in a public place.

Berman is due to appear before Folkestone Magistrates Court today.
