DOTING husband Peter Ruck has set a high standard for men hoping to treat their beloved on special occasions.

To mark 35 years of marriage to Susan, the 56-year-old whisked her away on an Antarctic cruise, the latest in a string of exotic getaways the Tonbridge couple have taken to celebrate landmark anniversaries.

For their 25th, Peter surprised Susan with tickets to the Seychelles, and on their 30th they travelled to the Canadian Rockies and went on an Alaskan cruise.

Mr Ruck, a keen amateur photographer, took 750 snaps during their two-week holiday in December, which included a few days in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.

He described their latest getaway as "phenomenal. The scenery was stunning".

Despite being in one of the coldest places on Earth, the Rucks were warmer during their 10 days in Antarctica than they would have been in Tonbridge, where temperatures plummeted to -7 °C.

Mr Ruck, general manager at Baldwins Travel Tonbridge, said: "We only got down to -3 °C. We had blue skies and sun.

"On the whole we were pretty lucky. We had some extremely good weather."

The grandparents of two were among 200 passengers on the cruise ship, which set sail from Ushuaia in southern Argentina.

Smaller boats took the holidaymakers ashore where they got to explore the snowy surroundings and local wildlife, accompanied by guides.

Mrs Ruck, 57, said: "It was amazing seeing the penguins. Seeing them in real life, they're so comical to watch.

"It's quite difficult to tell someone what it's all about. To me it was just, wow. We were really lucky to be able to do this."

The pair do not yet have any firm plans for their ruby year, but Mrs Ruck thought her husband probably had something in mind.
