HOCKEY: Simon Langton Boys' Grammar School U16 hockey team won the South Final at Tonbridge, beating Trinity School 1-0.

The final was end to end with both goalkeepers and defences holding strong, preventing either side from scoring. One small lapse in concentration by the Trinity team was all it took to allow Wintle to score for the Langton.

The Langton team piled on the pressure by marking Trinity's players tightly and, with some excellent inter-passing play, managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

Earlier in the day, the Langton boys beat Kingston Grammar School 3-2 , which was a very nervy match from start to finish.

The Langton boys started slowly and went a goal down, but eventually, after some positional changes at half-time, managed to equalise with a goal from Cutts.

Within a minute the ball was down the other end of the pitch and Kingston scored again. Langton regrouped and managed to play some passing hockey and, eventually, the equaliser came from Cutts. The winning goal came after a short corner Wintles rebounded up from a Kingston stick and Vaughan hit the ball home in a fashion reminiscent of a cricket pull shot.

The team held on for a win thanks to man of the match Hylands clearing the ball away from the Kingston goal, time after time.

The National Schools' Finals take place this week, where Simon Langton Grammar School will represent the South region along with Trinity School.

Simon Langton squad: Wyver, Vaughan (c), Berry, Hylands, Mortley, Neal, Parsons, Alexopoulos, Wintle, Cutts, Clark, Monks, Curd, Coulter, Allen.

The school's U13 team have also qualified for their age group final, on May 11, at Cannock.
