BANANA sandwiches, snails and space hoppers were just some of the unusual items featured at a children's fun race day this week.

Youngsters aged from 5 to 18 enjoyed all sorts of crazy contests at the Wacky Races day, held at Whitstable's Community College.

Competition was fierce as kids battled through events such as apple nudging, space hopper and scooter racing, and a timed challenge to see how many balloons they could stuff up their jumpers.

In a unique team relay, contestants made banana sandwiches on a high-speed production line before devouring them as quickly as possible.

And fortunately no real snails were hurt during the afternoon.

The "snails" were the children themselves as they climbed inside plastic balls before fighting it out to the finish line.

Organiser Laura Armstrong, from Canterbury City Council's youth team, said: "After trialling it at the Lounge on the Farm festival, we decided to put on a whole programme of events over the summer."
