Wondrous Walk 5: Pegwell
DON’T put those walking boots away, just because it’s autumn.
That’s the advice from Thanet Ramblers’ Colin Bridge who devises the Gazette’s Wondrous Walks.
His fifth walk, around Pegwell and taking in Stonelees Nature Reserve is, he says, just the walk for this time of year.
"It’s well into Autumn now, the leaves are coming off the trees, there’s a nip in the air and the days are getting shorter," says Colin.
"But don’t put those walking boots away. Thanet has its own special climate and always delivers those special days of crisp temperature and sparkling sunshine.
This is just the walk for a bright Autumn morning and a good one to take the binoculars on too.
"The start is along the best cliff top path in Thanet with splendid views out across Pegwell Bay and plenty more to see closer at hand. Pause for a moment by the Viking Ship, with a chance to read the background information instead of speeding by in a car. Press on down to Pegwell Bay Country Park on the very edge of the reed beds, stop in the bird hide a while, then on to Stonelees Nature Reserve and the splendid herd of Highland cattle.
Enjoy the tranquillity of the reserve, then head for home along the cycle track, easy walking but lots more views inland and back to Ramsgate.
"There are more Thanet pubs on this walk than you can shake a walking pole at so there's no shortage of refreshment."
For those who prefer a shorter walk, park at the Country Park and choose either half.

“Hi all,
Re: comments about where the walks button is:
If you scroll down on the Thanet homepage, in the middle column, underneath the photo slideshows, Google ads and the Thanet news team contacts, is the link to the walks and an interview with Colin.
I hope this is helpful.
