THE woman shot by police in Sevenoaks was lawfully killed, an inquest jury has decided.

Ann 'Tosh' Sanderson was killed following a stand-off with officers behind the M&Co shop in the High Street.

The 37-year-old made history by being the first woman in the UK to be killed by police.

However, a 9-2 majority of the jury believed she did to kill herself, agreeing with Tosh's former lover Tracy Sumner who told the inquest Tosh did not want to "end it all."

Guidelines have been issued to police for them to handle similar situations better in the future.

Tosh was caught on CCTV brandishing what was believed to be a handgun in the town centre in the early hours of June 11, 2007.

She pointed the weapon at cameras several times, set fire to an industrial bin and tried to set alight another. Her weapon turned out to be an air rifle.

Tosh was shot and died from a single gunshot to the chest.
