A WOMAN has been seriously injured in a car explosion.

The vehicle exploded just at about 1.10pm in Vigo, near Meopham.

Firefighters put out the burning car with foam and a lady with serious injuries was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Nearby homes have been evacuated and police have cordoned off Harvel Road, Commority Road and Southfield Road are closed.

Army bomb disposal experts have been sent to check the vehicle before police begin a forensic examination.

A police spokesman said: "We would ask people to stay away from the scene to allow the emergency services to do their job."

Fire crews were still there on standby at 4.30pm.
