“Leatherhead 7 Whitstable Town 1: Despite having what looked like a good goal in the first minute, a Mark Munday powering a header from just yards out ruled offside by the linesman. In the third minute Leatherhead took the lead with a swift breakaway straight after the disallowed goal. Munday though he had scored again in the seventh minute but that was also ruled out, the ref saying that Town¿s manager, (Munday) had shoved a player to get to the ball.
On neither occasion was their one single arm raised or voice of protest by any of the home side on each occasion the ball ended up in the back of the net. This in itself spoke volumes for both decisions, which set the pattern for the rest of the match.
Sure ¿The Tanners¿ played some good football and no one would argue that the four goal lead at half time was not deserved, But, and it¿s a big but. If the two disallowed goals have stood would town have been on the receiving end of a hash scoreline, I think not.
At the interval with Town tailing by four goals to nil, a visiting Sussex League official commented, ¿It could easily be three goals apiece¿
Straight after the restart Town were another goal down, then minutes later they trailed by six courtesy of a penalty. The seventh goal for the home side came in the eightieth minute with Town still pressing to score, they finally netted from via a Gareth Cornhill free kick after some belated pressure as the clock ticked down. Manager Mark Munday can take some comfort for the disciplined way his side behaved as they suffered their biggest Ryman League defeat, there were no silly late tackles, no fists thrown and no lack of effort as Town tried to salvage some pride from the game. With two of the three sides around Whitstable at the bottom of the table also loosing and games in hand on the other teams, with the exception of Ashford who are six points behind town with two games in hand, the other results were kind to town. They play Ashford on Wednesday night, with every game now taking on a bigger significances, but non more so at Ashford on Wednesday.
