Wells are undone in second-half
Faversham Town: 6
Tunbridge Wells: 2
TUNBRIDGE Wells crashed to a heavy defeat at Faversham, despite being the better side during a first period in which Benji Agana and Carl Cornell fired their side into a two-goal lead.
Faversham pulled a goal back before the break, but Wells still led at half time.
It was all change in the second period though, as the league leaders smashed home five goals to win 6-2.
"Faversham certainly showed on Saturday why (in my opinion) they are Ryman bound," manager Martin Larkin said. "We had a gameplan and we executed it perfectly for 43 minutes, taking two well-taken goals, all from working the ball wide through switching the play quickly to take advantage of how narrow they play.
"But Faversham's set-plays were so strong – all six goals came from four corners and two free kicks, all first or second phase: great delivery and great movement.
"We could go on all day about being without Perry Spackman and Tom Davey (our two best defenders of set pieces), but we won't make excuses – we simply couldn't handle Lee Shearer and the delivery from their set pieces.
"We have to take positives, and the fact is we did control the first half, we scored two good goals, scored directly from the game plan we put into place at training on Thursday, and we didn't allow Faversham a single shot on target from open play – something the back four should be very proud of.
"Perry and Tom will return for next week, and Brad Draper is not far away – but we need to start playing for 90, not 45 minutes. The foundations are certainly there for all to see."
Wells, the first side to take points from the Town this season, started brightly and stunned the home side as they took the lead after only four minutes, a loose ball inside the area was fired home by Benji Agana. Larkin's side doubled their advantage on 23 minutes, Cornell finding the back of the net from close range.
From there, however, it all began to unravel, with Faversham a menace from a string of corners.
Town's persistence finally paid off when Shearer headed home from a Dan Larkin corner on 43 minutes to narrow the score line at the interval.
On 54 minutes they were back on level terms, Luchford's corner from the left headed home by Dave Botterill.
Seven minutes later and the home side were in front, yet another corner kick which was only partially cleared, before Shane Hamshare powerfully headed home from six yards out.
Collier made way on 70 minutes, replaced by Buster Smissen whose first action on the pitch was to congratulate Luchford as he netted from close range for Town's fourth of the afternoon.
Botterill scored his second of the match as Town made it 5-2 on 76 minutes with the home side threatening to score with every attack.
Skipper Tom Hickman rounded off the scoring on 78 minutes.
Wells will be hoping to bounce back tomorrow when they travel to Norton Sports.
On Tuesday they host Sevenoaks Town in the big West Kent derby. Kick-off 7.45pm at the Culverden.
