Wells strike back to thwart Town in thrilling FA Cup tie
TUNBRIDGE Wells and Sevenoaks Town were forced to do it all over again, following a pulsating FA Cup tie at the Culverden on Saturday.
Wells led at the break thanks to an Alex Rich effort, but Town hit back to lead after just 53 minutes, through Chris Walker and Matt Foreman.
However, with the visitors seemingly in control the game changed dramatically on the hour, when Town midfielder Guy Smith was given a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.
In an end to end finale both sides had chances, but it was Wells who got the equaliser with 10 minutes left on the clock through substitute Jon Pilbeam.
As can be expected in a local derby the opening minutes were frenetic, with neither team really able to get a grip on proceedings.
For Town, forwards Joe Creasey and Matt Foreman were full of ideas. Guy Smith had the first good chance but he was thwarted by Wells keeper Mikelle Czanner.
At the other end Benji Agana should have scored with a header and the big man was at the heart of the Wells opener. On 34 minutes he skipped past three or four defenders, played in Rich who side-footed home.
Town nearly hit back immediately but Joe Minter's drive flew over, while Wells could have gone in at the break 2-0 up, but Brad Draper dragged his shot wide.
Town hadn't played badly in the first-half, but boss Simon Jones must still have said something inspirational at half-time - judging by the way they came out of the changing room.
On 46 minutes Wells left-back Steve Ashmore needlessly gave the ball away, Foreman played in winger Chris Walker who didn't appear to have anything on 20 yards out.
However, he looked up and unleashed a stunning strike that flew past Czanner into the roof of the net. The goal ignited Town and Walker in particular, who gave Ashmore a torrid 45 minutes.
Sevenoaks turned the game on its head on 53 minutes when Foremen finished impressively. They could have made it 3-1 moments later when Walker teed up Foreman, whose effort was well saved by Czanner. The follow up came to Creasy, but his header was again saved by the Wells keeper. On 62 minutes the hosts got a lifeline. Smith was given his marching orders for jumping in on Sam Phillips - the intent was there even if contact wasn't.
In the last half an hour the game could have gone either way. Foreman and John Alegbe both had great chances to make the game safe for the visitors while Agana was a massive threat for Wells. The hosts eventually got the equaliser on 80 minutes when super sub Jon Pilbeam netted with a superb shot on the turn to set up Tuesday night's replay.
