UNITY has been the key ingredient to Tunbridge Wells Hockey Club's stunning start to the season.

The ladies begin their second half of the season against Holcombe at Hawkenbury Recreation Ground tomorrow morning. The campaign could not have gone much better so far, with Wells in pole position to claim the East League Division 2 South East title.

They sit top, having won all but two matches. Ladies captain Jen Hunt, who has led the way with 21 goals, has been delighted with how things have come together.

"Personally, I am very happy to have been scoring so frequently, but it's a team sport, and I would not have had those scoring opportunities without all the other girls in the team," she said.

"I think the best thing about our team is the unity we have. With our first team captain Roberta Organ bringing everyone in together, we have a really strong unit, both on and off the field. I think that our defence – Ele Cairns, Lisa Fiddimore, Roberta Organ and Boo Tooze – have been essential to our success, only conceding seven goals all season – the best in the league.

"We have extreme strength and fitness in our midfield, with Amanda Tyburski and Bex Ross dominating in the middle, and Holly Baldwin, Emma Allington and Ollie Gerrett on the left and right sides. The forwards have been key too, with Holly Turner, Becky Law (though unfortunately injured) and myself, creating dynamic movement up front and goal scoring opportunities."

Wells head the league at present, but there are a whole host of clubs queuing up behind them, ready to pounce if they have any slip-ups. Canterbury III, Folkestone and Thurrock are all within striking distance.

"Everyone is very excited to get going in the second half of the season," Hunt said. "We just want to keep up our winning ways and hopefully end up on top. I think the top of the league is extremely close at the moment and I think a number of teams are in the running.

"We like to take each game at a time, and concentrate on the opposition we face each match, but obviously we would love to win the league as a reward for all the hard work everyone has put in to this season."

Wells are looking to get 2012 off to a flying start against Holcombe tomorrow morning, 10am.

It's also full steam ahead for Tunbridge Wells men in the Kent/Sussex Regional 2 division. They are also top, five points clear of second-placed Old Bordenians. They are away at Blackheath this weekend.
