Wells confident ahead of relegation clash
AFTER seeing both the seconds and thirds stay in their respective divisions, Tunbridge Wells Cricket Club's chairman Steve Green is looking for the first XI to make it a hat-trick tomorrow (Saturday).
Wells entertain Sevenoaks in a winner takes all match, which will decide who stays in the Kent Premier League – as if local derbies don't have enough riding on them as it is.
Both sides need just five points from the clash to make sure of their survival, but there will be no easing off from either of these great rivals and it is sure to be an enthralling afternoon at the Nevill.
"It is a really big game and there is a real possibility that one of us could be relegated," Green said. "We have had a good couple of weeks, getting wins against The Mote and Lordswood so go into the match in good spirits.
"I am sure we will give it 100 per cent on the day and it will be interesting to see what happens. We have given ourselves a chance of survival, but we know we still have some work to do.
"We didn't start the season as we would have hoped and it has been difficult.
"It was a critical win against Lordswood. If we had lost that game we would effectively be relegated already, so we have shown a bit of character to win that game already."
The relegation battle is a far cry from Wells's exploits last season.
They had an excellent campaign, finishing in third position, behind only big spending Bromley and Hartley.
However, consistency has eluded them this campaign, much like Sevenoaks, and they are sweating on their Kent Premier League status in the final weekend of the season.
"Every game in the Kent Premier League is tough, every week you are tested," Green said.
"We will have a full strength team when we play Sevenoaks and I am sure they will have a strong side as well.
"Both sides have good players and it will come down to which players perform on the day better.
It would be great if we won on Saturday and with the forecast looking good for that day, it will be an exciting match."
All the drama begins at 12noon down at the Nevill.
As a club, Wells don't just offer men's cricket, but also provide girls with an opportunity to try the game out. On Sunday, the club are holding their own under-11 girls cricket festival, sponsored by The Brew House Hotel. Sixteen teams from around Kent, Sussex and Surrey will play a series of Kwick Cricket games on the expansive Nevill ground. The event takes place between 11am and 4pm and there will be a barbeque and bar available.
