Webb's future in the balance
THEY say money makes the world go round and for motorcyclist James Webb that is frustratingly true at the moment.
To put it simply Webb has none. His two main sponsors have pulled out and there are no new ones on the horizon, which is causing him a huge headache as the winter draws on and the 2010 season approaches.
It's not like Webb doesn't have opportunities for next year. The factory Kawasaki team want him to ride in the British Superstock championship – but he needs to bring a £40,000 sponsor with him. GR Motorsport have also offered him a ride – as long as he brings £30,000. It is money he doesn't have and his dreams of being a champion are fading fast.
"You can be a really good rider, capable of winning British championships, but you need to take money to that team," the Pembury ace said. "There are riders out there who are not so good, but they have all the money, get the good rides and everyone thinks they are wonderful. It is frustrating."
Twenty-year-old Webb made a name for himself riding in the R6 Cup during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He won numerous races, collecting pole positions and setting lap records.
His displays caught the eye of Clive Padgett and he was offered a ride in the British Supersport Championship. He has been consistently finishing in the top six for the past two years, riding amongst experienced riders such as Steve Plater, but now the money has run dry. Webb is even considering upping sticks and moving in with his girlfriend near Donington Park, as he believes this will give him a greater opportunity to build contacts and hopefully secure sponsorship money.
"I'm trying to get some backing and most people who do superbikes come from that end of the country," Webb said. "It will help me stay in touch with people easier and make it easier to go to meetings. And it saves driving up and down the M1 all the time!"
It seems this winter could be make or break time in Webb's career.
"I've been cold calling people, but they don't know you from Adam. It's hard for them to hand over £15,000 – it's not going to happen.
"If I don't get a ride I will just play it tight and see if anything comes up. People get injured and people have to step in. It may just be a case of sitting back and doing that!"
