AUSTRALIA: In Queensland smoking is prohibited within ten metres of children's playgrounds, at patrolled beaches, at major sports stadiums and within four metres of public buildings. Some beaches in Sydney also have smoking bans in place
CANADA: Patio smoking at bars, restaurants and casinos is banned in Calgary, Alberta and Nova Scotia
HONG KONG: Smoking is banned in most recreational areas and beaches
IRELAND: First country in the world to impose a smoking ban within three metres of a public building
JAPAN: Selected wards in Tokyo prohibit smoking in the streets, with fines for violators. In response, Japan Tobacco has provided free smoking cafes
NEW ZEALAND: Outdoor smoke-free laws cover the grounds of all schools, some hospitals, stadiums and two university campuses. A number of local councils have made their playgrounds, parks and swimming pools smoke-free
USA: Thirteen Californian cities (including Los Angeles) have prohibited smoking on their beaches and four have banned smokers from lighting up in parks or any outdoor venues. Calabasas and Belmont, both in California, have almost blanket smoking bans in public places, whether indoors or outside.
