A YOUNG pup has been mauled to death on Ramsgate beach in front of his distraught 11-year-old owner.

Francesca Milgate and a friend were walking her 15-week-old blue whippet, Bailey, on Friday of last week, when the ferocious attack took place.

As Bailey sat at his owner's feet on the Main Sands, a white Staffordshire bull terrier bounded over and savaged him.

After Francesca tried to pull them apart and failed, a man walking along the beach came to her aid and prised the terrier off.

The terrier's owner is said to have then walked away with his dog.

Bailey was left covered in blood, with a crushed skull and a broken leg. He was later put to sleep by a vet because his injuries were so severe.

Francesca's mother Carol Milgate, 45, said the family have been devastated by the attack.

She said: "It was lucky that Francesca wasn't holding Bailey – she could have been savaged herself. I can't believe anyone would be that heartless to just let their dog do that and walk away."

Police were called and arrived after the attack.

A police spokesman said that under the Dangerous Dogs Act, "it's difficult to prove which dog was at fault" when they are both off the lead.

“My heart goes out to the whippet and owners. My dog was also attacked by a white staffie on Ramsgate beach a few weeks ago. The young man with it actually set the dog on my dog and laughed when it had her round the throat. Luckily my dad acted fast enough that she was OK, but he was then chased by the owner who set the dog after her again. A friends dog was also attacked by a staffie in Ramsgate last week and has some nasty puncture wounds. It's irresponsible dog ownership that is the problem, if a dog is going to behave like this then it should be wearing a muzzle at all times when off the lead in public, it's not difficult to muzzle train. I hope something is done about it before anyone else is hurt!”

“its discusting that the police let people get away with this sort of thing. i feel so sorry for the little girl, so glad she didn't get hurt. I have a 1yr old staffie but im so glad he isn't like some of them. he is so soppy bless him. I think I may have seen the dog that attacked this dog as it got aggressive towards my dog. I had to tell the owner to put it on the lead as if it tried 2 attack my dog I would have had 2 kick the thing in the throat, i love animals so much but if another dog tried to hurt mine and i knew it had harmed some one elses then i wouldn't think twice about kicking it. i know that may seem harsh but thats how I feel. Some people are so stupid though, if they know their dog is aggressive to other dogs why let them off the lead, it doesn't make the person look good when there dog attacks another, it just makes them look irisponsible. Not all staffies are aggressive though, i have only met one aggressive staffie in my life, so please people don't tie them all with the same brush as they are not all the same and it is not fair. But i still think this staffie should be put down, it is giving other dogs of the same breed a bad name. x”

“I am a ramsgate dog owner with 2 small dogs. It never ceases to amaze me that people allow their dogs off the lead when they know they may be aggressive to other animals. My heart goes ot to the little girl and her family. As other people have said - staffie versus 15 week old puppy. I think we all know who the culprit is here. There is a young guy who walks a white staffie in Boundary Road Park quite regularly. He actually set his dog on my dogs as we were walking across the road. Fortunately for what ever reason it did not attack. I think my husbands reaction may have stopped it. It could be tha same one. The dog and owner are very aggressive.”

“I was absolutely sickened to read of yet another attack by this type of dog. Where was the owner? Why are the police so .ineffective in their policing of these dogs AND their (MORE OFTEN THAN NOT) Chav owners. How can the police say "it's difficult to prove which dog was at fault" Staggering problem,... let me see......15-week-old blue whippet OR Staffordshire bull terrier........Quick call in Inspector Clouseau, he would have more sense and perhaps solve this very difficult case!!!!!”
