Memorial campaign for fallen soldier
A WAR hero killed on duty in Afghanistan just 12 weeks after his wedding is set to be honoured in the village where he married.
Steps are being taken to include the name of Lance Corporal Ivano Violino on Shipbourne's war memorial, following his death in September 2007.
The father-of-two, also known as Sean, was killed by a roadside bomb while on a routine convoy in Helmand Province.
L Cpl Violino, 29, had been married to wife Katey, who grew up in nearby Dunks Green, for just three months when he died. The couple tied the knot at Shipbourne's St Giles' Church and lived at Kings Hill barracks.
News of his tragic death rocked the village and hundreds of friends, family and comrades packed the church for his funeral.
Shipbourne parish councillor Lynette Sargent has been the driving force behind the campaign to get his name on the memorial, and struck upon the idea at last year's Remembrance Day service.
She said: "His name's always been read out when we do the Remembrance Day Service, and this year when it came out and his family was there, I thought it would be rather nice if we could put it on the memorial.
"These young soldiers are going out there and they're giving up their lives. He was so young and, when I see the family there every November, I thought it would be a tribute to him."
Cllr Sargent knew L Cpl Violino as a member of St Giles' congregation and sang at his wedding with the church choir.
She added: "It was such a lovely thing and then before you know where you are, you're singing where you're burying him."
L Cpl Violino's family have supported her proposal.
His father-in-law, Paul Bearsby, from Dunks Green, said: "At the last Remembrance, we had a big wreath. We thought, 'Do we put it on the war memorial or do we put it on Sean's grave?'
"When Lyn rang me up a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was really nice. We weren't thinking about that."
Mr Bearsby thought it was important to remember those killed in recent conflicts.
"Whether you agree whether they should be out there or not, they're still due respect. I think it's very current and, unfortunately, since Sean there's been an awful lot more," he added.
The Royal British Legion backs the scheme but Cllr Sargent also needs approval from the War Memorial Trust and planning permission from the borough council, as the memorial is listed and within a conservation area.
She hopes both will agree and wants to get L Cpl Violino's name included in time for 2010's Remembrance Day service.
