Ukip councillors demand Newington Road pool car park is reopened
UKIP county councillors for Ramsgate are demanding that Thanet council restores the use of the Newington Road car park back to residents.
Martyn Heale and Trevor Shonk say they are “dismayed” that TDC has put concrete blocks across the entrance leaving a gap only big enough for one car entry/exit.
The pool closed this month following the opening of a new one at Ramsgate sports centre.
The car park is used by residents, patients at the Newington road clinic and parents of children at St Laurence Junior School and Small Haven School.

Mr Heale said: “We are dismayed that Thanet District Council find it necessary to impede the parking facility that has been available to local groups for decades at the Ramsgate Swimming Pool site by placing unsightly concrete blocks across the entrance, causing single vehicle entry/exit which will cause chaos in Newington Road at busy times.”
The site, owned by TDC, is earmarked for sale to Kent Fire and Rescue to rehouse Ramsgate’s fire crews. The fire service has been searching for a base as it has been in the Effingham Street station for more than a century.
A planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of the year.
Mr Shonk said: “ While the future of the site is determined by TDC and KMFRA these community groups should have access to the facility. KMFRA has said that they will conduct a public consultation over the site, so why disadvantage these community groups until a viable alternative has been found? What we do not want is the eye-watering security costs and ongoing waste of council tax payers money as with the old Newington Infants School site in the nearby Princess Margaret Avenue.”
