One of the UK's most senior Catholic figures is to visit Ramsgate
ONE of the Catholic Church’s most senior figures is to visit Ramsgate.
Archbishop Antonio Mennini, Papal Nuncio to Great Britain, will visit St Augustine’s, to celebrate its first anniversary as the country’s newest Catholic shrine.
The visit, on Friday, March 1 and to mark the occasion a special mass will be held in the church at 7pm.
All parishioners and supporters of Friends of St Augustine’s are welcome to attend.

Archbishop Mennini’s visit, which has been planned for some weeks, coincides with the end of AWN Pugin’s bicentenary year (1812-2013). The renowned architect, responsible for the House of Lords, designed the church.
Although not known at the time of the arrangements, the visit will take place the day after Pope Benedict XVI steps down as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Commenting on the visit, Fr Marcus Holden, chairman of Friends of St Augustine’s said: “This is a great honour that the pope’s representative to the UK should agree to come to St Augustine’s in Ramsgate. It demonstrates the importance given by the Catholic Church to St Augustine’s in Ramsgate and England’s newest Catholic shrine as a very special place of worship.”

The restoration campaign to save and restore Pugin’s church started in 2011 with the setting up of Friends of St Augustine’s.
This March marks the end of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Pugin’s birth.
