Since the first ever tweet was sent in 2006 Twitter has changed the landscape of social media, breaking news stories, bringing celebrities and their fans closer together and giving millions around the world a mouthpiece.

From breaking superinjunctions to allegedly inciting riots the site has proved as controversial as it has captivating.

In the next few weeks Twitter will have increased its coverage to 17 different languages and boasts everyone from world leaders, to pop stars and Olympic athletes among its users.

The most followed tweeters include Barack Obama with just under 10 million, teen pop sensation Justin Bieber with more than 12 million and Lady Gaga who tops the Twitter charts with over 13 million followers.

Figures for the UK reveal that 40 per cent of MPs now use the social networking tool as well as 35 of the country's 46 police forces.

Last month a record 8,868 tweets were sent per second after US pop star Beyonce showed off her baby bump during a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in LA.
