TUNBRIDGE Wells world number one Will Bayley will lead a ten-strong British table tennis team at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Team officials will be pinning their hopes on Bayley, who recently celebrated his 24th birthday, after failing to medal in Beijing, despite consistently achieving podium places in previous Paralympics.

He is joined by Rob Davies, Paul Davies, David Wetherhill, Paul Karabardak, Ross Wilson and Kim Daybell, who will all compete in their respective men’s classes.

Paralympic veteran and former world bronze medallist Sue Gilroy is joined by women team-mates Sara Head and Jane Campbell, while four further athletes might be added nearer the Games.

“I’m delighted to welcome this group of athletes to ParalympicsGB,” said British team chef de mission Craig Hunter.

“To have all ten all ranked within the top eleven in the world shows that there is real potential within this squad and tribute should be paid to the governing body for supporting the development of these athletes, six of whom will be competing in their first Paralympic Games.”

Gorazd Vecko, who was recruited as team performance manager following Britains failure to podium in Beijing, believes this is the most powerful British table tennis team ever taken to the Paralympics.

He said: “I am very proud that this young squad have earned their place at the Paralympic Games. Paralympic Table Tennis is very competitive and so to have this many players well placed as we go into a home Games is a great situation to be in.”
