Six hundred people in Tunbridge Wells have written to their MP with concerns about the future of the Post Office Card Account.

Greg Clark MP for Tunbridge Wells this week urged the Government to take a swift decision on the account.

More than four million people nationally use the account and the loss of the contract could mean more Post Office closures.

Mr Clark said the number of letters from his constituents on the issue highlighted how worried people were about the future of their local post offices.

He added: "I campaigned hard both locally and nationally for Post Office services to be retained in Tunbridge Wells and the closures in January were a major blow to local people which is still being felt."

He was now "very concerned" changes to the contract for the Post Office Card Account could threaten the business of the remaining Sub-Post Offices.

He said: "We cannot accept another wave of closures which will take Post Office services away from even more local people and local businesses."

He added he had urged the Government to take into account the social implications of its decision including "access, familiarity and impact on local Post Office services".

Mr Clark said he continued to campaign to secure the future of Post Office services within the Tunbridge Wells constituency and listed his priorities as:

Continuing to support the Post Offices that have closed but still operate as vital local businesses

Pressing for a new Post Office presence in the south of Tunbridge Wells town centre.

Trying to prevent further branch closures by pressing ministers for the Post Office Card Account contract to stay within the Post Office.

“Yes, and re-open the post office in St. John's too please.”

“We can only hope the local MP succeeds on this, otherwise the queues will get even longer at Five Ways. I am still working on trying to re-open a branch in St. John's.”
