ONE of the joys of sitting in a dentist's or doctor's waiting room is to catch up with magazines about four years old.

Grapeviners have flicked through publications celebrating the wedding of a celebrity and been left scratching their heads – as the celeb in question has divorced and already remarried.

But at last week's blood donor session at the United Reformed Church in St John's Hill, Sevenoaks, we were heartened to pick up a current magazine.

So well done, the person who donated a June copy of music mag Word – it gave a little joy and entertainment in the queue.

WROTHAM Parish Council built the tallest beacon in Kent to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the weekend, and left concerned motorists thinking a fire was raging out of control.

The blazing pyre was reportedly seen as far away as Crowborough and a motorist on the A20 dialed 999 to report it.

Firefighters who rushed to the blaze quickly realised what had happened.

Pete Gillin, Wrotham Parish Council chairman, said: "You can tell when you have built a decent beacon when you realise that the sirens are coming for you."

A CONSTITUENT of Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon said he felt embarrassed at turning up for a meeting in his shorts and T-shirt. "I never realised he was so senior in the Government," he said.

A check through the Chronicle's picture archive reveals Mr Fallon, pictured right, has never been photographed in anything less than a suit and tie.
