GLOWING tributes have been paid to popular Tunbridge Wells personality and "consummate performer" Stephen Upsall who died suddenly on Saturday.

Described as "an entertainer to the last", the 40-year-old who lived in Rotherfield was well known in Tunbridge Wells as an actor and stand-up comedian.

He was also the publicity and marketing officer for Tunbridge Wells Theatre Company.

The father-of-two had recently been diagnosed with leukaemia.

Close friend and fellow actor Stephen Batchelor told the Courier: "He was an incredibly talented, inventive and generous chap who would always light up the company that he was in, making people laugh and groan in equal measure.

"It's not too much to say that his passing leaves a big hole not just in the lives of his friends and family, but in Tunbridge Wells as a whole. He was an absolute one off and we won't see his like again," he added.

“I knew Stephen at Claremont Primary School. He was always the cheeky chap of the class, making me laugh and I was glad to catch up with him again a few years ago. I was so impressed with what he had achieved and how he had become such a renowned resident of Tunbridge Wells. My thoughts are with those he left behind. He will be very much missed.”

“Cannot believe we have lost such a great man. He had many talents and was always cheering me up. I am going to miss him alot as will everyone else. Plays and rehearsals wont be the same without him. He always lit up the whole room with his humour and talent.
My thoughts are with Yasper, Florence and all his loved ones.”

“Stephen's untimely and tragic death has left a huge void in our family. He was a much loved Grandson and Nephew. Stephen was kind, considerate and generous to a fault and not forgetting his fabulous sense of humour. He was a wonderful family man and devoted to Florence and Yasper. As a family we will miss him desperately.”

“Steve not only acted in many of our plays but also served on the committee, covering publicity. He was influential in helping to restore the Pantiles Players funds a few years ago, organising fund-raising events and finding sponsorships for some of our summer productions.

I personally directed him in two of our summer shows - Much Ado about Nothing and Twelfth Night and enjoyed his obvious enthusiasm for the roles he played and his valuable contributions with ideas on character etc. I think that one of his most successful roles was as Malvolio in Twelfth Night which he played as a obsessional ex-military Scotsman, complete with kilt and badly fitting hairpiece!

Although Steve had moved away from the PP in recent years, I know he was a valuable member of the Trinity Theatre and they will, I am sure, miss him badly. Whenever I bumped into him in the town we always had a good natter and he brought me up to date with news of his little girl, Florence and her step-brother Yasper. They will be devasted by their loss, as will, of course, be his partner and his father, Tony, to all of whom we send our sincere condolences.”

“Very sad to hear about the death of Stephen. He was a joy to work with, a lovely guy and a fine actor. He did a brilliant job of promoting TTC and had a real soft spot for the Courier. He'll be sadly missed. Caroline (Editor of Go!)”
