TRIBUTES have been made to an Ashford Borough Council member who passed away suddenly at the weekend.

Councillor Peter Goddard was the chairman of the licensing and health and safety committee and was also the chairman of the taxi forum for the authority.

The 73-year-old had been a member of the borough council for Tenterden South ward since 2003.

He passed away on Sunday and Ashford Mayor Cllr Matthew French said he would be missed by all who knew him.

He said: "I am very shocked at the news of the passing of Peter, I've known him for many years - he taught me at Homewood School long before either of us ever thought about council work.

"He will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

"My prayers are with his family."

Funeral arrangements will be confirmed later this week and ABC members are set to pay their respects at the next full council meeting on Thursday, May 17.

Cllr Paul Clokie, ward member for Tenterden North said: "I and my Tenterden colleagues are very sad indeed to hear this news.

"Cllr Goddard was a highly respected member of ABC and he will be sorely missed.

"He has served the residents of Tenterden for the past 10 years to their considerable benefit.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time."
