AN animal-lover is calling on people to reconsider their pest-control methods after a helpless hedgehog had its head sandwiched in a rat-trap.

The spiky young female was found trapped at St Mary's Churchyard, Hadlow, by a passer-by on Friday, who quickly notified nearby Folly Wildlife Rescue volunteers.

The metal bar of the rat trap had pinned the hedgehog's forehead to its base, and she was left struggling until she was found.

Folly volunteer Caroline Wetten, of Castle view, described the trap-setter as irresponsible.

"How far she had travelled I have no idea, but I'd like to find the irresponsible person who bought and set the trap," she said.

"The hedgehog is now recovering and is lucky not to have a smashed skull. If people must kill rats and mice, I wish they'd contact their local council and not resort to indiscriminate DIY methods.

"I think it's disgusting, People should think before they trap animals because it can have an undesired effect.

"It's upsetting the poor thing had to go through that."
