THE DEMOLITION of the ABC cinema site in Tunbridge Wells has moved a step closer with companies being asked to bid for the contract to knock it down.

On Monday, joint owners The Carlyle Group and Bellhouse Joseph started accepting applications from companies to take on the work.

The grot spot in Mount Pleasant Road has been standing idle for more than 11 years and permission to demolish the site was granted last December.

Organisations have until the middle of May to bid for the contract.

Edward Bellhouse, the chairman of Bellhouse Joseph, said: "Although there may have been little visible sign of progress there has, in fact, been a great deal of work going on behind the scenes since we acquired the site six months ago.

"This has included regular discussions with the council, which is as keen as we are to see the site brought back into use."

Owners hope to submit a planning application, for a development including shops and homes, this summer.
