A 17-YEAR-OLD girl said she is too terrified to leave her house after being shot at while driving to work.

Harriet Perry was driving through Polhill when both front side windows of her car were smashed.

A small object, which police believe to be a bullet, catapulted through the car just millimetres from her.

Miss Perry explained how glass suddenly smashed around her, falling into her hair and face, on Saturday (March 27) at about 8.40am.

Despite passing her driving test only three weeks before, she managed to steer the car into a nearby side road and escaped with cuts and bruises.

"I was really frightened and in shock," said the hairdresser, who works at Matthew Cross salon, in London Road, Sevenoaks.

"There was glass everywhere and I had no idea what had happened.

"A cyclist stopped and helped me call my parents and I told him a brick had come through the window, but it couldn't have been because it would have landed on my lap.

"When a police officer arrived, I had to get in the car with him and drive up and down the road, but it was terrifying because I kept thinking it was going to happen again."

Miss Perry explained how she had been too frightened to get in the car since the incident and had to ask her friend to drive her home from the garage.

She also admitted she did not sleep for two days after the incident.

"I am so frightened about showing my face around the area in case someone recognises me," said Miss Perry, of Julian Road, Orpington.

"I have had a splitting headache since it happened and I keep waking up at night worrying."

Police confirmed they are investigating an incident of criminal damage on the A224 at Polhill.

Smashed

A spokesman said: "A teenage girl was driving along the road at around 8.40am when the two side windows at the front of her car smashed, about 150 metres before the turning to Pilgrims Way.

"It is not known how the damage occurred but police are following a number of lines of inquiry."

Between 2pm and 3pm on the same day, a Ford Ka being driven along Polhill had both driver and passenger front windows broken. Stones were later discovered inside the car.

Anyone with information should call police on 01732 379217 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
