ONCE again the magic sparkled in Minster last week when the village hall was transformed into a Minster Playhouse and the players produced a show that was sheer delight for all to watch.

Stepping Out, Richard Harris's comedy about a tap dancing class in a village hall, was perfect for the setting and the audience, which enthusiastically whistled and cheered through at least three curtain calls.

Director Niki Kelly had trimmed some of the sub-plots to focus on the comedy. It was a good decision, laughter peppered the evening, due also to the cast who ably demonstrated their progression from hilariously hopeless hoofers to polished performers, despite many of the class never having donned tap shoes before rehearsals.

What character actors they are too: Justine Foster, Sally Reynolds, Ruth Clement, Gemma Hewitt and Gloria Withers all terrific comediennes and a joy to watch. Peter Barnett and Fiona Dirksen were superb as timid and troubled Geoffrey and Andy, as was Heidi McGee as the delightfully obstructive pianist Mrs Fraser and Sarah Davies as glamorous nurse-with-a-heart Lynne.

What is so good about a Minster Playhouse show is the terrific atmosphere. You can sense that the audience, many the cast's friends and family I suspect, are really rooting for the performers. In this production particularly it was hard to differentiate between reality and performance as the cast, just like their characters, had to present a glittering tap dance show at the end.

And did they? You betcha.

If you missed Stepping Out in Minster, there is another opportunity to see it on Sunday, July 1 at the Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone. Visit www.sarah thorne-theatreclub.co.uk for details.

If you fancy trying the old shoe shuffle yourself Sally Reynolds is beginning tap dancing classes on Wednesday mornings at the Granville Theatre, Ramsgate in September call 01843 591750 for details.
