Speldhurst hang on to second spot
BOWLS: Second place Speldhurst A have kept their runners-up place in Division One even after losing to Wadhurst A.
Wadhurst bowled one of their best performances with B. Crittle beating K. Brand 29-9 and S. Dadswell triple in fine form with a 25-8 win over P. Gibbs, Wadhurst finish the season in fourth.
The winners Tunbridge Wells A finished with a close game over Pembury 33-29, Pembury losing the match 4-2, M. Constant's triple 9, M. Milgate's triple 18, not to be out done Pembury came back to claim two points thanks to L. Birnie's win over B. Hipkiss 20-15, Pembury drop to fifth.
Grove A were lying in third place and playing at home against bottom place Grosvenor, Grosvenor started well with G. Bridges triple getting a 19-16 win over I. Vanns triple but with J. Westwood's triple digging deep and holding onto a close 15-11 win against P. Eldridge, Grove stay third with this 31-30 win.
Calverley B Division Two winners held onto a close 30-29 win over Grove B to finish the season.
M. Guntrip lost 14-16 to P. Morphett while W. Murrel beat J. Lowrie 16-13, Grove end up third. Southborough A were playing Culverden and B. Gregory's triple took the first points against G. Styles triple 23-13 but E. Hickmotts triple were unable to clinch all points losing 13-17 to G. Bryant.
Southborough and Culverden swap places to finish fourth and fifth.
Last place Tunbridge Wells B took on Bayham & Lamberhurst A, the home team clinching a 39-30 win, T. Prince winning 23-11 against P. Sheldrake with R. Colyer just losing to S. Hoar 16-19, Tunbridge Wells finish bottom while Bayham & Lamberhurst end their season in runners-up, a good performance by Bayham after they were promoted last season.
In Division Three the new team Groombridge were hoping to push the leaders all the way over the last three games, playing against Bayham & Lamberhurst B at home.
The first game went well with C. Myers winning 14-9 over K. Patterson and G Parsons was hoping also emulate the other triples win, but it was not to be, as he lost to D. Parks 11-17, Bayham winning 26-25 (4-2). Second place Speldhurst B were playing at home and taking on Wadhurst B.
First points to Speldhurst with D.Killingbeck getting a 19-15 against P. Maylan but J. Barden's triple fought back against E. Baker's triple with a 19-15 win.
Both teams finished 34-34 and picked up three points each, Speldhurst still stay second with Wadhurst in fifth.
Another close match was between the leaders Calverley A and Southborough B.
Calverley started well with a fine 21-11 thanks to T. Hendley over K. Smith.
G. Holmwood was unable to pick up points against R. Stanley's triple losing 15-21, Calverley taking four points, Southborough stay fourth.
In the last match saw Bidborough A take on their other team Bidborough B, the A team through R. Hebditch and N. Waller were not troubled by the B team, skipped by R. Hookway and C. Rea losing, 28-14 and 27-10, the A team take all six points but still stay seventh while the B team stay bottom, the B team have lost their last three matches.
On Sunday, the Wells visited Holmesdale BC for the final of the Kent Millennium Trophy. The match being against Holmesdale who were the holders.
The home side got away to a good start and led on the 5 disciplines 27-48 after 10 ends. The Wells started to fight back and after 15 ends the score was 58-59.
The completed results were George Heard in the two wood singles lost 12-16, Terry Prince in the four wood singles won 21-14, Mick Milgate and Bob Hipkiss lost the pairs 11-22, Phil Colyer, Roger Colyer and Ron Newman won the triples 22-15. The fours of Lionel Pavey, Ian Corke, Ken Bateup and Duncan Hanmore were 12 shots ahead after 18 ends but Holmesdale fought back to take eight shots over the last three ends.
Not quite enough, giving the trophy to the Wells by three shots.
On Saturday, the Wells visited Maidstone BC for a millennium league match.
Phil Colyer, David Burbidge, George Startup and Lionel Pavey won 19-17. Les Yeomanson, Derek Burr, David Taylor and Roger Colyer won 23-13. Maidstone also won on 2 rinks but the Wells had the highest overall score winning 8-4 in points.
In the ladies triples Denise Smith, Val Harvey and Sheila Huggett won 22-10 whilst Maidstone won the other triple. With higher overall score the Wells won 4-2 in points
