DOVER Harbour Board is set to take legal action against embattled ferry firm SpeedFerries over a 'substantial' unpaid bill for use of the Western Docks.

Last week the under-fire company saw its only vessel SpeedOne impounded at the French port of Boulogne in a row over debts owed to authorities there.

The ship's seizure forced the no-frills operator to cancel all sailings indefinitely while it attempts to negotiate a settlement with the Boulogne Chamber of Commerce.

The ship is still tied up in Boulogne and talks between have not so far achieved a compromise deal to get the service running again.

Now industry sources have confirmed SpeedFerries, which is run by Danish entrepreneur Curt Stavis, is facing a fight with the authorities at the Port of Dover over what has been described as a "substantial six-figure sum".

Rumours at the port are suggesting a debt of around £250,000 in unpaid rent.

A spokesman for Dover Harbour Board refused to comment on the unpaid bill. He said: "It is company policy not to discuss customer relationships with the media."

“Sad- it was the only appropriate way of travel for sportscar enthusiasts....
They always catered for ow riding sports cars”

“I actually only sailed with SpeedFerries twice, but on both occations found their staff very polite and helpful & I definately would have sailed with them again in the future. It is blatently obvious that they were forced out of business by LD Lines, probably with "help" from the port of Boulogne, as the vast majority of cross channel customers are British we must vote with our feet! I will never, ever travel with LD Lines, no matter how cheap their tickets are, the service offered by P&O is very poor so I will stick with Sea France - they provide a decent meal on board and unlike the slop provided byP&O, there is space to sit down and eat it too.”

“He didnt pay his bills, therefore had a big advantage over his so called"pirate" rivals who paid what they owed, its easy to offer low cost tickets if you are not paying your way. Think Speedferries have been found out as the real Pirates”

“Sad to see them get into difficulties, hopefully they might get another chance at offering a very good value service. Best of luck to the company and staff.”

“I have seen so many reports on sites with messages of goodwill....and that's nice!
How many companies will fold and families be affected by companies that do not pay their bills!
Although simpathetic - there is always another angle.
Perhaps instead of bailing out the Banks with £XXbillion - Gordon should give us all £10k, to spend as we see fit - pay off part of our debts etc - then the correct institutions would get the money - all well wishers could give theirs to Speedferries?”

“I agree that Speedferries did a good job for us and their staff have always been most helpful to me. Perhaps 'Fight the Pirates' did smack of hubris and win few friends in high places. Could it be that their continued use of Boulogne was hampering re-development of the dock for the French LG Ro-Ro service? I have also lost money on advance tickets (obviously upset), but do feel that this time Goliath has slaughtered David who was doing his best to keep the cost of cross channel crossings affordable for the general public. A sad loss for many satisfied users.”

“as someone involved in the cross channel industry for many years i suspect that the hand behind this is LD lines who will want a clear run into Boulogne I am sure they are pulling the strings of the chamber of commerce. It is difficult enough to start a new service against substantial entrenched compettition at the best of time never mind in a recession with freight volumes and consequently prices dropping through the floor. how can they succeed with such an infrquent service. Boulogne in cloud cuckoo land again as it was with j p airs and they will get stung the same way and end up with no connection to the uk. Its a second rate fishing port and it wil never be anything else”

“Disappointing. The service was well run and excellent value for money.
I detect the hand of the big operators here.”

“Used the service since it started couldn't fault it given price of crossings. Many of us use the bulk buy tickets fortunately if you paid by credit card your covered. But lets not assume the company is dead and buried. Its a good business model no reason it couldn't rise from the ashes. If LD lines are considering opening a crossing there must be enough passengers numbers who want to use it.”
