A DERELICT greasy spoon cafe overlooking the Lido in Cliftonville has been converted into a cafe-bar and performance space just a stone's throw from Turner Contemporary.

Moonbow Jakes attempts to represent the change that takes place following investment in a new public building and reflect how local people react to what has happened.

Creator John McKiernan, through his Platform-7 project, has run similar cafes in South London and says the response in Cliftonville, "despite the area's stereotyping", has been very warm.

The charismatic Londoner fell in love with the area as a child during his summer holiday trips on the train from Peckham.

The former cafe has been given a facelift with leather-covered booths and John says it will become venue for exhibitions and performances that have been influenced by customers and Thanet artists.

The first display featured Gandhi's work with the poor.

This weekend sees a gathering, where local poets can share their work through impromptu readings around the theme of displacement.

John describes the free event as not a formal poetry reading "more a collaboration between poets and the town".

Moonbow Jakes is located at 18 Cliff Terrace, Cliftonville.

The cafe is open until September 26, Wednesdays to Fridays 4pm to 11pm and from 10am to 11pm at weekends.
