DOVER was gripped by wintry weather at the weekend as an Arctic chill saw temperatures plummet below freezing and a blanket of snow cover the town.

The white stuff began to fall late on Saturday night. By morning some decided to make the most of the snow, dusting of their sledges to hit the slopes.

Motorists had to endure tricky driving conditions on side streets but Kent County Council drafted in more than 60 salting lorries, spreading more than 3,000 tonnes of salt across on the district's most important routes which remained largely clear.

Dover District Council gangs were also out in Dover and Deal town centres, hand clearing and salting shopping areas.
