Smugglers thwarted at Dover docks
A POLISH lorry driver has appeared in court accused of trying to smuggle 750 kilos of tobacco through Dover hidden in a load of toilet rolls.
Robert Kusion, 25, appeared at Folkestone Magistrates Court on Wednesday and has been released on bail.
He was arrested after UK Border Agency officers discovered the haul in the lorry which had travelled from Dunkerque on Tuesday.
The revenue evaded is estimated to be £88,000.
Kusion will appear at Dover Magistrates Court on December 10.
UKBA officers have also discovered a haul of weapons, ammunition and cigarettes at the docks.
Vitalijus Tauskela, 48, was stopped by officers yesterday after he had arrived at Dover on a ferry from Calais. During a search of a lorry, officers discovered eight hand guns, 200 rounds of ammunition and 9,600 cigarettes.
Tauskela, a Lithuanian national, was arrested, interviewed and charged. He appeared at Folkestone Magistrates Court on Wednesday, and has been remanded in custody. He will appear at Dover Magistrates' Court on December 10.
