ALL EYES were on the adorable little Lily Manclark this week as she launched a new anti-litter campaign.

Eleven-year-old Lily, who is a pupil at Margate's Salmestone School, was signed up by the council to front their new Take Pride campaign, which aims to keep the isle litter-free.

Lily's infectious smile will appear on banners on the beach, posters in town centres, window stickers in businesses and free litter and dog mess bags for the next six months.

Surrounded by a room full of press and council staff at the campaign's launch last Tuesday, brave Lily, who loves singing and dancing, said: "When I was on Palm Bay beach there was loads of seaweed and rubbish. I was disappointed and it's really bad.

"I wrote a letter at school about the rubbish and brought it home with me and my mum and dad helped me post it off to Thanet council.

"I was really nervous and excited when the council called and I cried a little bit. I don't think I'm a celebrity, I just don't want to see any litter."

She's got the support of the whole council.

Thanet street cleaner Angela Clewley, 39, whose image is also featured on the poster campaign, said: "It always upsets me to see people dropping litter. I had to clear up a cooker someone had dumped on the pavement in Cliftonville. I just load it on my van and take it away."

Waste boss Martin Wise, hopes using people in his campaign will make it more personal.

He said: "Lily's letter highlighted some of the things that were problems here in Thanet. We wanted to use her to help us deliver an important message to the public. Lily is pointing out what we all think – she is Thanet's newest celebrity."

The posters will be going up around the isle from this week.
