SEVENOAKS Vine's cricket week proved to be a huge success with more than 4,000 runs scored and youngsters playing a starring role.

The week kicked off against Lloyds of London. The ground looked a picture and Savills, proud sponsors of the Vine, would have been delighted with what was to follow.

Lloyds won the toss, decided to bat and due to a combination of aggressive batting, perfect batting conditions and a few dropped catches, a massive total was on the cards.

However, some improved bowling and fielding from the Vine in the second half of the innings, meant Lloyds finished on a still large total of 343 after 50 overs.

From the first over of the Vine reply Ant Shales attacked the Lloyds bowlers and went on to hit an outstanding 152 off just 56 balls.

This brilliant innings put the Vine in charge of the game and fellow opener Immi Sayeed (97) ensured that the run rate was maintained, despite losing a couple of wickets late on. The Vine eventually chased down the total after only 30 overs, ensuring that the Vine got off to a positive start in cricket week.

In the evening game, the Vine Development side took on Holmesdale in a Twenty20 game for the Polhill Cup.

The hosts batted first and made 148, with Oscar King top scoring with 60.

Holmesdale struggled against the Vine pace and spin attack, and couldn't keep up with the run-rate, eventually being bowled out for 120.

It was a great all-round performance by the Vine, with some promising talent for the future.

History was made on Tuesday when two double hundreds were scored in the Vine match against the AKCC. The Vine batted first, Mike Barber hit a tremendous 207, but the 350 odd runs weren't enough to win. That is because Mike Costa then hit 208 to inspire the visitors to an unlikely victory.

In the evening, Knockers won the Clarke Trophy final.

Wednesday, Savills Day, saw the MCC come to town and it was yet another feast of runs. The Vine batted first and hit 424. Ollie Howick and Mike Barber, again, both passed 150. Amazingly the game went down to the last ball thanks to a century from Will House. However, the Vine held on for a winning draw as the MCC ended on 423-9.

The triangular tournament on Thursday proved to be an exciting affair. The Vine tied with Old Tonbridgians in the first game (Old Tonbridgians won in the super over). Old Sennockians then beat Old Tonbridgians, in the next match, off the penultimate ball.

The final game was also tied, with Old Sennockians beating the Vine in another super over.

Cricket week came to an end on Friday when the Chairman's XI, led by Omar Iqbal, face the Vine. Iqbal brought together much of the Vine's title winning side from 1997 and the game proved to be a fitting end to the week.

In the 40-over clash, the Vine batted first and scored 242. Tom Parsons hit 65. For the Chairman's XI Bruce Leeke, Chris Crang, Mike Caniford each took two wickets.

Shami Iqbal (53) and Crang, with a quick-fire 40, were the main run-getters for the Chairman's XI. They needed three to tie off the last ball, but could only get two, so were left just one run short on 241-9.

"For it to come down to the last ball of the match was a great way to finish cricket week," Omar Iqbal said. "It was a fabulous week and we were really lucky with the weather. I suppose it wasn't a good week to be a bowler. I've not checked the record books, but I'd be surprised if this was not a record-breaking week in terms of runs scored."

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, chairman of cricket, Shami Iqbal added: "It's great that everyone is back from university and school.

"The most important thing is we use the momentum from last week and really kick on this season."
