Royal birthday greetings for 110-year-old Violet
A BIRTHDAY card from the Queen will be among those on Violet Wood's breakfast table this morning.
But the embossed envelope holds no surprises for her - it will be the 10th Royal greeting she has received.
Birthday girl: At 110, could Violet Wood be the district's oldest resident? wtlc260809violet-2
Today (Wednesday) marks Violet's 110th birthday, making her probably the district's oldest resident.
Among guests at her party at St Martin's Rest Home in Whitstable will be the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, but sprightly Violet is not impressed by dignitaries.
She said: "I don't know how to address him but I shall just be myself and they will just have to put up with what I say.
"I expect I shall find something to say; I usually do. I don't feel frightened of people and I can usually find an answer to whatever they say.
"That is not bad for someone my age!"
Violet grew up in Dargate, near Faversham, and lived with her two sisters on a farm, where she met her husband Henry, known as Harry.
The couple were married for 62 years before he died aged 92.
She said: "I still miss him. It's a long time to be with someone and I was only 20 when we married.
"But I still see my son David and I still give him what for if he doesn't behave!"
The oldest of her sisters, Violet has outlived Bertha, who died aged 106, and Marjorie, who was in her 90s.
All three went to Graveney school, where their father was also a pupil.
She said: "We had a lot of fresh air and I think that was good for us.
"I used to drive the horse and the vans and I worked all my life on the farms, sometimes with Harry.
"I drove my car until I was 80 and I would have kept going but the old car packed up before I did."
Violet, who has seen 21 Prime Ministers and six monarchs, will celebrate her birthday with cake but her favourite meal is pickles, toast, cucumber and crisps. For breakfast she has Bovril on toast.
She said: "I look forward to my breakfast and my tea. I don't like a lot of fuss. I just want my birthday over and done with now. Fancy living on this earth more than 100 years. It doesn't seem reasonable.
"But we have a good laugh at things here and I don't give in too easily. Laughing makes everything feel better.
"After my party things will settle down again, or I will fly off to heaven to be with the girls and Harry."
