Road closures planned for Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon
Two thousand runners will descend on Tunbridge Wells on Sunday for one of the best half marathons in the country. We publish the road closures below.
The Children's Mutual Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon is in its 26th year and is the biggest mass participation event in the town.
It has been voted the 8th best half marathon in the UK by Runners World magazine and is renowned for being both tough, because of the hilly course, and quick.
The runners will hit the street between 9.30am and 12.30pm and residents are warned to expect travel delays.
The course is a single lap anti-clockwise loop, starting and finishing on the A26, Southborough, and passing through Bidborough (Bidborough Ridge), Penshurst (Penshurst Road), Fordcombe (Fordcombe Road), Langton Green (Langton Road), and Tunbridge Wells (Mount Ephraim and St John's Road).
As well as these major A and B-roads the smaller streets at a junction with them will be closed to let the runners through.
Organisers, the Tunbridge Wells Harriers, have reassured residents there will be rolling road closures – some for as little as 20 minutes, and diversions put in place.
Race director Sarah Russell said she had worked closely with Kent Highways Services, Kent Police and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to keep disruption to a minimum.
She told media sponsor the Kent and Sussex Courier: "We understand it does cause some disruption, but it's for a very short period of time and only once a year and we are grateful that people will be patient and understanding. The closures are a safety essential.
"We hope residents will get behind the race and support the runners. It is a great event and one which the town can be proud of. It is a popular race for people training for the London Marathon."
The race is raising money for two charities – the Cardiomyopathy Association and Kent Kids, Miles of Smiles, and hopes to make £10,000.
It is sponsored by child trust fund experts The Children's Mutual, on Mount Ephraim. Sainsbury's Tunbridge Wells will be providing goodie bags for runners. Entries have now closed.
