Reid takes the South East Open
WHILE the hated by some dogfish have been a major catch from the local shore in recent weeks, this weekend the other dogfish species – the smoothhound – turned up along with some big thornback ray. Smoothhound grow far bigger than the lesser spotted dogfish and are renowned as strong fighters – hook one and your reel spool will empty of line quickly.
Sunday's South East Open series fished at Sandown near Deal saw bumper catches despite entry numbers being down because of the lack of the vital peeler crab bait.
Winner was Martyn Reid, of Folkestone, with four smoothhounds and 11 dogfish for 16kg. Second was Sean Manning and the biggest fish landed included a 10lb thornback ray for Mick Tapsell, of Folkestone, and a 10lb smoothhound for Lee Heaver, of Folkestone.
The Dover versus Calais festival of sport fishing section was also fished at Deal and it was a clear win for the Dover squad.

Two thornback rays were landed among the dogfish with competitors pegged in front of the Deal 1919 Angling Club HQ. They included a 6lb ray for John Brothwell of Deal and a 5lb fish for Mark Hurcombe of Deal.
THE Ashford Sea Match Group fished their latest event at Deal with the Tenth Green at Sandown beach the venue where the dogfish again kept the rod tips nodding.
Winner was Mike Wigston (3.05kg), second was Keith Hopson (3.05kg) with club secretary Dean Graham third with 2.30kg.
The Seabrook Sea Angling Association's latest boat event was won by Michael Warne, of Hythe, with 36 points including two smoothhound of 7lb.
FRESHWATER match results include the latest Folkestone and Shepway AC Thursday night competition at Radnor Park, Folkestone which was won by competition secretary Darren Smith with 17lb 14oz.
Peter Joiner, of Lyminge, was second with 14lb 2oz and Mick Milton, of Folkestone, was third with 12lb 8oz.
The competitions are fished every Thursday night while the Sunday series matches have been cancelled because the club have no one to run them.

BEST of the carp catches from around the region have come from Cottington lakes near Deal.
Shane Castle, of Sheerness, banked a best of 40lb 8oz on two grains of maize.
The final competition in the Bradley Baits-sponsored maggot-only open series is being fished in the match lake at Cottington on Monday, June 4.
