PUPILS from six primary schools across Tonbridge and Malling have learned the basics of newspaper reporting and photography thanks to the Courier.

At the Hadlow Manor Hotel on Friday, chief photographer Gary Francis showed 12 budding "snappers" from Woodlands, Hadlow, Hildenborough, Borough Green, Kings Hill and Wouldham schools how to take eye-catching pictures. Meanwhile, Tonbridge chief reporter Oliver Frankham explained the dos and don'ts of news writing.

“I think asking children to organise ANYTHING in a brewery would be OUTRAGEOUS! I would certainly write to my local newspaper and then the feathers would fly!
I can see the anger of the local community reported accurately and without bias in any way.

maybe a photo for this could be a cute kitten or an OAP with a large Courgette?”

“I am sure they would love to move the goal posts if they were actually able to pull their finger out to actually find them.. Could they organise a party in a brewery? Unlikely..”

“Ah, so the girl at the back could be moving the goalposts? Is that something that happens much?”

“Surely if it was a breaking news story they would send a journo with a point and press camera 24 hrs after it had happened, not the high ranking Chief photographer Mr Francis who creates eye catching pictures..”

“Dirtylaundry - you are absolutely right , the picture shown is a fantastic example of how NOT to take a great news picture.

If I were to take a picture "12 budding snappers" learning how to use a camera I would look to have one of the "12 budding snappers" with a camera at least some where in the picture. Surely that is the point of the article. Even the girl in the background doesn't have a camera, which then begs the question why have her in the frame at all?.

Alternatively if I was looking to take a picture of someone playing croquet then I would probably end up on my stomach looking through a hoop with the person AND the ball in the picture.

This picture is neither a good picture about croquet or a good picture of 12 budding snappers learning to take eye catching pictures.

Maybe there were some 'eye-catching' pictures that were taken but weren't printed?
    Maybe there weren't..”

“I fail to see what the photograph has to do with the story. Is it suposed to be an example of the chief photographer showing 12 budding "snappers" how to take eye-catching pictures?

If it is then it is a great example of how to take a dull, out of context, badly composed image. Some local news photographers have much talent. I guess they were not available that day!

Kids. Don't do what the man tells you.

Oh, and by the way, no matter how bad the photographer, Chief photographer has a capital C.”
