A SECOND shipment of live animals left Ramsgate port early on Thursday morning.

Five lorries carrying sheep and calves were loaded onto a ferry destined for the continent.

Protestors, including animal lover Mary Knott from Margate, shouted at the drivers.

She said: "The only way I could stop myself from breaking into tears was to turn my emotion into anger.

"I shouted 'evil animal abusers' and 'sub-human'. The woman next to me burst into tears."

Two three-tiered lorries containing about 250 calves which are registered in Ireland and three lorries containing about 900 sheep, one four-tiered, loaded up onto a ferry called Joline at around 5am.

Miss Knott added: "These calves have clearly travelled over from Ireland all the way through Wales and across England and no-one knows how much further they have to travel.

"How can it be financially viable with inflated fuel prices to ship them out of Ramsgate?"

Ramsgate councillor and member of Thanet Against Live Animal Exports Ian Driver has organised a public meeting at St Lawrence parish hall at 7pm on Friday, June 17.
