Pollock on form as Oaks win yet again
Old Dunstonians: 3
Sevenoaks: 48
SEVENOAKS captain Tim Golds has called on the town to get behind his team after they steamrollered Old Dunstonians en-route to their fifth league win in a row.
The Oaks are in brilliant form at the moment, epitomised by Saturday's 48-3 win, and this weekend they host second-placed Hove.
"It was another great win, but this weekend's match is our biggest of the season," Golds said. "It's a massive game – a real four-pointer as third plays second. It would be great if the town comes out in force to support us."
On Saturday Sevenoaks travelled to 10th placed Old Dunstonian's looking to continue their strong run of form, which has seen them rise to third in the league.
With a few changes to the side through injury, Oaks still boasted a strong 18 man squad, proving that strength in depth this year is proving invaluable.
In perfect conditions, given the time of year, Oaks knew the opposition were no walk-over and immediately felt the force of the bulky Old Ds' pack.
With Sevenoaks failing to find any immediate rhythm – the opening 20 minutes proved challenging, and errors started to creep into the Oaks' play.
However, it was the in-form Pollock who started the revival. With good hands going through the back line, the left winger was shown the outside by his opposite man and needed no further invitation – pacing towards the corner for the first try of the game.
Within a few minutes Oaks had scored again and, it was Pollock once more who crossed the line. Bates added the extras, and shortly after the fly-half slotted a penalty to make the score 15-0 to Oaks. The half-time whistle blew and Oaks knew they had to improve in the second half, to close the opposition out.
Playing down the hill and with the wind, Oaks still struggled to find any consistent rhythm. A neck injury to the opposition lock meant the game was halted momentarily for a stretcher to come on. This gave Oaks another chance to re-group and this time it seemed to work.
With forwards and backs combining, and the ball going through seven pairs of hands, it was Luke Harding who finished off a mouth-watering move. At this point Oaks started to go through the gears, and the visitors' pack began to demonstrate their ability to provide quick ball and create the ideal platform for their electric backline.
Strong ball carrying from Jimmy Stewart and Kiwi flanker Kenny Pihemma – the latter celebrating his 100th cap for the club – created excellent momentum for the backs. This led to two tries from the impressive Alex Barber. More flowing moves led to further tries from young centre Simon Tree, who showed good pace to finish off, as well as veteran player-coach James Leverington getting on the score-sheet. Pollock was also on hand to round the full back and complete his hat-trick.
Old Ds added three points with a kick at goal, and with minutes remaining the home side were determined to cross the line themselves. With Oaks looking for a fourth straight game without conceding a try, the forwards were able to turn over the scrum and a superb last-ditch tackle from lock Mike Walton saw Oaks hold out to emerge 48-3 victors.
Looking ahead to Saturday's crunch clash against Hove (2pm ko at the Paddock), head coach James Leverington said: "A lot hinges on Saturday's game. We need to continue with the way we've been playing and I think second place is there for the taking. Confidence is everything and we are confident at the moment."
He added: "Everyone at the club is looking forward to the Tonbridge Juddians match next month. We should have beaten them at their place, so we've got a bit of a vendetta and are quietly confident of causing an upset. Everything is to play for."
