EXTRA police will patrol train carriages to protect commuters from yobs and louts, Transport for London has promised.

TfL has recruited 50 new officers with a brief to travel to and from the capital from stations including Bromley, Beckenham, St Mary Cray, Orpington and Bickley, in a bid to crack down on antisocial behaviour.

Other outer London stations in the scheme include Ravensbourne, Shortlands, Hither Green and Catford.

Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy said: "Many of our passengers use the national railway network for part of their journey and it is important they feel safe on all parts of their journey

"We have invested millions in more policing on our network which has resulted in reducing crime levels on the buses, Tubes and London Overground.

"We know there is more to do, however, and by increasing the police presence on these national railway services, we will ensure passengers feel more secure when moving around on the capital's transport system."
