DOTING husband Peter Ruck has set a high standard for men hoping to treat their beloved on special occasions.

To mark 35 years of marriage to Susan, the 56-year-old whisked her away on an Antarctic cruise, the latest in a string of exotic getaways the Tonbridge couple have taken to celebrate landmark anniversaries.

For their 25th, Peter surprised Susan with tickets to the Seychelles, and on their 30th they travelled to the Canadian Rockies and went on an Alaskan cruise.

Mr Ruck, a keen amateur photographer, took 750 snaps during their two-week holiday in December, which included a few days in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.

He described their latest getaway as "phenomenal. The scenery was stunning".

Despite being in one of the coldest places on Earth, the Rucks were warmer during their 10 days in Antarctica than they would have been in Tonbridge, where temperatures plummeted to -7 °C.

Mr Ruck, general manager at Baldwins Travel Tonbridge, said: "We only got down to -3 °C. We had blue skies and sun.

"On the whole we were pretty lucky. We had some extremely good weather."

The grandparents of two were among 200 passengers on the cruise ship, which set sail from Ushuaia in southern Argentina.

Smaller boats took the holidaymakers ashore where they got to explore the snowy surroundings and local wildlife, accompanied by guides.

Mrs Ruck, 57, said: "It was amazing seeing the penguins. Seeing them in real life, they're so comical to watch.

"It's quite difficult to tell someone what it's all about. To me it was just, wow. We were really lucky to be able to do this."

The pair do not yet have any firm plans for their ruby year, but Mrs Ruck thought her husband probably had something in mind.

    “Peter
I am not in the slightest bit interested in you or where you went on your holidays thank you very much.I have visited many countries and taken hundreds of photographs but I dont feel the need to bore people with them.
If you want to treat your wife then good for you but dont expect the rest of us to buy into the "doting husband" angle.
I have used your travel agents before but I probably wont again
given your reaction to a light hearted comment.I hate to think how you deal with your customers who dont agree with you.”

“Why are some people always so quick to negatively judge what other people have done or achieved? Mmm jealousy perhaps?? Personally I think this was a great article; a happy read in comparison to all the other depressing stories that seem to bombard our papers these days. Shouldn't we take this story for what it is: 2 people sharing their happiness with us. Well done!”

“dmh of sussex obviously has a chip on his/her shoulder. The Courier obviously thought it was of interest. I didn't write the arrticle having only sent in some photos for the letters page. I don't have to justify myself to anyone, however, it wasn't a freebie, I saved up for 5 years to go on this trip. I am now saving up for another good trip in 5 years time. If dmh has a problem with that I pity dmh.”

“As he is the manager of a travel agent and all the trips are probably freebies I think the answer is probably NO.
Its a bit like working for a chocolate company and getting your wife a box of chocolates as a present.
Actually why do we want to know anything about MrRuck .His holiday and marital arrangements are of no interest to anyone other than himself.Mind you its a cheap plug for his travel agents.”
