Pan's fiery dancers work frozen magic
YOU may think Hollyoaks star Jorgie Porter – tipped to win this year's Dancing on Ice competition – is good at ice skating.
If so, you probably haven't seen the Russian Ice Stars and their production of Peter Pan on Ice.

ICE DANCE: Dimitri Naumkin as Peter Pan and Thierry Cerez as Captain Hook swash their buckles in Peter Pan on Ice GIAC20120131D-003
Breathtaking spins, daredevil lifts and split-second timing make it an impressive spectacle that showcases the talents of the performers. And sadly for Jorgie and her fellow celebrities trying their luck on TV, it reveals that they are no more than well-trained amateurs.
Precise choreography means no inch of the Marlowe stage is wasted and the imaginative set features a giant copy of the book, with each page turn revealing a new backdrop.
The performers make each character their own with facial expressions and signature moves, and Katya Murugova is incredibly fairy-like as Tinkerbell.
Valdis Mintals stars as JM Barrie, giving the show an extra dimension as he interacts with the characters he creates, and his one-armed lifts are a true feat of power.
The production is beautifully romantic, but with an overdose of glitter, glamour and topless men in loincloths, it may be better suited to women than men. But there were some great fight scenes with swashbuckling swords and cutlasses that gave an extra edge to the skating tricks.
Thierry Cerez gave Hook a really fun, panto-style, personality that invited plenty of boos and Yuri Kuprin deserves a special mention for donning a glittery crocodile costume.
There were a few stumbles and one fall on the night but they are easy to forgive given the complexity of some of the stunts.
Circus skills gave it an added edge and at some points there was almost too much to take in. However, in the scene involving the return of Tiger Lily, the talented dancers were left swaying randomly at the back of the stage, which seemed a bit of a waste.
The story is completely told through dance with only the minimum of narration, which may not suit everyone, but the cast are expert at bringing their characters to life.
And with their skills, a frenzy of fire and moments of pure magic, I defy your heart not to melt – despite the chill from the frozen stage.
