THE school run just got easier thanks to the introduction of three new bus services following a fight by parents.

The details of services for secondary school children living in St Mary's Island and the Isle of Grain have been unveiled by Medway Council.

Pupils were spending three hours a day going to and from school until mothers and fathers launched a campaign for a dedicated bus service.

Starting on September 1, two Manns Travel buses will run from the Isle of Grain to Strood Academy and Chatham Grammar School for Boys at the beginning and end of the school day, with a late bus for pupils who stay behind.

The St Mary's Island bus, run by Arriva, will go to and from schools in Rochester and Chatham.

The service will run until the end of the academic year in 2011, when it will be reviewed. It will operate as long as the bus is used by at least 25 children per day.

Medway Council says other services are being improved over the autumn, starting with the introduction of more Sunday buses and new routes.
