New Sainsbury's for Hythe?
Eleanor Jones
SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's WILL try to open a new store in Hythe.
The chain announced this week plans to redevelop the Smiths Medical site, on Military Road, into a 34,000 square foot retail space, with 270 car parking spaces.
Before any planning application is submitted to Shepway District Council, the company will have a public consultation in May, including an event at which locals can view and comment on the plans.
Hythe's Kent County councillor Chris Capon said: "I'm sure there will be mixed feelings about Sainsbury's coming to Hythe.
"It's a pity it's not in the High Street but to have a Sainsbury's in Hythe must be a terrific asset to the town.
"My concerns will be for the movement of traffic on and off Sir John Moore avenue, which has always been a problem in the past, and I shall make my views known to Sainsbury's so as to get the best possible development and access to it for all concerned."
For more information on the plans, call the Sainsbury's information line on 0845 6021151.

“this is the best news i have heard in a while. i understand that people have concerns but i think the good will out way the bad. as for the 300 cars of the employee's, i dont think all 300 staff will be there at one time! it will be more like 30 cars at one time. if your concerned about the lorrys then speak to the EHO they can adjust the delivery times with sainsburys. do lorrys drive past the front of your houses now? they do mine i live right on the A259. the busses are the worse for me.
any way good luck sainsburys! cant wait to feel the boost to the local econmy!”

“went to the meeting last at SDC and am gutted that SDC have approved - this will be the death knoll for Hythe. Traffic will be appallling - it's bad enough now around the one way system, and the high street shops will inevitably suffer. a very concerned lover of historic hythe.”

“Traffic - I understand that Sainsburys expect 15,000 people to use their shop per week which is equivalent to the population of Hythe. They have allocated 270 car parking spaces? I have read that in the Sainsbury's car park in Kettering: the first 15 minutes parking is free if £5 is spent in the shop. After 2 and half hours parking it is £50, yes £50! So people will shop in Sainsburys - forget about visiting the High Street, they won't have time. Sainsbury's will be built next to the A259 ,a "rat run" which bypasses the Town Centre and traffic will increase. Trees will be cut down and instead the view will be of some cheap looking rectangular brick thing out of character with the rest of Hythe. Why do the Town Council and Shepway want this development ? I can see no advantage expect for those making money from this development. I think it's already a done deal - residents don't count.”

“I live in Hythe and personally think it will be a Great idea bringing sainsburys to Hythe, 300 jobs, less pollution due to locals walking to get their shopping OK there is waitrose if you want to pay through the nose for your groceries. For myself it means i won't have to travel to Cheriton to get more reasonably prices goods, Also less cars travelling along the one way system due to being able to walk instead of driving for the 15K locals as someone kindly pointed out, This can only mean one thing (less pollution). How do i start a petition to keep sainsburys.
I agree that sainsburys must keep litter to an absolute minimum along with disruption which i think they should be able to manage.”
